Company Release - 3/6/2023

March 6, 2023 – Halifax, NS – Emera Inc. announced today the renewal of its sponsorship of the Emera Oval, signing a 10‐year, $1 million naming rights agreement. Emera is pleased to partner with Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) to support this iconic community facility which sees an average of 100,000 visitors per year. The Emera Oval provides visitors, residents, and communities with high quality, safe, and inclusive free recreational and instructional programming year‐round.

“At Emera, we’re passionate about supporting our communities,” said Scott Balfour, Emera President and CEO. “On behalf of our 1500 employees who live and work in Halifax Regional Municipality, we’re proud to continue our support of the Emera Oval. Since being built 10 years ago, it has become such an important public space. Our renewed partnership will support ongoing operations and enable the Oval to invest in adaptive equipment for both winter and summer months, new technology to improve operations, and enhance free and inclusive events for residents. More than a million people will experience the Oval over the next ten years, and as a company headquartered in Halifax, we are proud to help ensure that continues.”

“Thanks Emera Inc. for the continued support of this winter destination, a place that welcomes skaters of all ages and abilities and has become a year-round recreation destination,” said Mike Savage, Mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality. “A truly special part of our community, the Emera Oval is where many children first learn to ride a bike, where newcomers lace up their first pair of skates and where friends and families enjoy outdoor time together.”

Background

The Emera Oval was originally built for the Halifax 2010 Canada Games and was set to be removed in March 2011. Following overwhelming community response for it to become a permanent fixture on the Halifax Commons, Emera and other community-minded partners collectively contributed $1 million to ensure that this vision became reality.

The Emera Oval is a popular destination for public skating (mid-December to March) and wheeled sports (June to October). Every year, it is transformed into the largest outdoor, artificially refrigerated ice service east of Quebec City. The skating surface is equivalent to the size of three NHL hockey rinks, and the facility includes an accessible washroom, on-street accessible parking located on Cogswell Street, and wheelchair access to the ice surface.
